Medical Microbiology at ADC
From individual diagnostics to public health, supporting clinicians, hospitals and health authorities across the Dutch Caribbean.
Our Medical Microbiology department offers a complete portfolio of microbiological analyses.
We support every step of the chain, diagnosis, treatment, epidemiology and prevention of infectious disease, for both the individual patient and population health across the Dutch Caribbean. Veterinary samples are also analysed on request.
What We Do
From (current) infection to immune response: complete diagnostics
We quickly and accurately detect bacteria, viruses, fungi, yeasts, and parasites in human and animal material, including the immune response that can be measured after an infection via infection serology.
Â
Examples
- STDs: Chlamydia trachomatis, gonorrhea, herpes, HIV
- Stomach/intestinal complaints: norovirus, Salmonella, rotavirus, Helicobacter pylori
- Respiratory infections: influenza, COVID-19, RSV
- Viral infections: Dengue, Zika, Chikungunya, hepatitis A/B/C/E
- Multi-resistant bacteria (e.g. MRSA) and antibiotic resistance
Molecular diagnostics
- Diagnostics. Molecular and classical microbiological testing for healthcare institutions, GPs and medical specialists across the Dutch Caribbean. Covers detection of micro-organisms and the body’s response to them.
- Peer consultation. Treating physicians can consult the ADC medical microbiologist on individual patients and on broader policy around diagnostics and antimicrobial therapy. Advice given on diagnosis, treatment and infection prevention, on request and proactively, including input on antibiotic and chemotherapy policy.
- Hospital infection control. Detection and prevention of healthcare-associated infections, with hygiene advice that lowers infection risk.
- Public health. Joint work with the UO G&Gz, the CMC hospital hygiene department and the infection prevention committees of several health institutions. The team contributes to epidemiological investigations when the situation calls for it.
Advice and support
Our medical microbiologists advise healthcare providers and institutions on diagnosis, treatment, and infection prevention. We also offer support during outbreaks or resistance issues.
Hospitals & infection prevention
We support hospitals in detecting, analyzing, and preventing hospital-acquired infections. We also provide advice on hygiene and infection prevention within healthcare institutions.
Public health care
In collaboration with organizations such as Uo G&Gz and infection prevention committees, ADC actively monitors public health. For example, we participate in epidemiological research and provide laboratory support during outbreaks.
